Bright Floral Card

My entry for The Card Concept 136. I was inspired by the colours and layout. But I think that’s pretty obvious. 🙂

On my Clean and Layered card’s background I embossed with a folder then heat embossed the raised areas with @wowembossing Matt Dull powder. It intensifies the colour like clear embossing powder but isn’t shiny. The flowers are by @concordand9th Fine Line and Filled in Florals dies. I cut the outline with solid coloured cardstock and the backs with vellum. Then I layered the flowers with glue and foam adhesive for the large pink one. Not sure if you can see but I did brush some ink on to the center of the flowers to add intensity.

Wild Roses and Woodgrain Card

Guess what? I’m back as hostess on the Crazy 4 Challenges blog this month! I love being hostess in the summer as I am a huge fan of everything summery, the ocean, beaches, flowers, even the outdoors if I could eliminate insects and creepies! So this week our challenge is to use woodgrain!

c4c 19 woodgrain

I just got a new woodgrain stamp from Stampin’ Up, the first I’ve bought in at least 5 years. So it was perfect for this challenge. I stamped it in Simon Says stamp Khaki ink on PTI kraft cardstock. It was the subtle but not too much so. The flowers are from Simon too, the Delicate Flowers stamp set. I stamped them in Antique Linen Distress ink on some hot press Arches watercolour paper. The ink was quite noticeable at first but melts into the watercolour as you paint. I know some people don’t like that and it might not be ideal for animals or people because you can end up washing away the face detail but for flowers and leaves it’s perfect.

I painted the images with Daniel Smith paints and a Black Velvet Silver Brush. Each petal was done separately using a wet-in-wet technique so I would get a deeper coloured edge to each petal. This happens naturally as the paint dries. I also added some deeper colour at the base of each petal while the paint was still wet. In the case of the pink flowers, I added two colours, one to the tops of the petals then dropping in another colour at the base. Sometimes the colours blended on their own and sometimes I helped them along a touch with my paintbrush. To save paint, it helps to use one for each colour and one for water. This way you aren’t constantly washing paint off your brush! It may not be much but I’m sure it adds up over time. The pale pink flower is my favourite. I love the soft blush shades I managed to achieve.

I added the Hero Arts sentiment with copper embossing powder. Then I decided I needed some more copper. So I tried a trick I’d seen on YouTube, I think it was Kristina Werner. I sprayed some water from my spray bottle into my hand then added embossing powder. It won’t stay on long enough to heat set, it will blow away. So heat it from underneath! It worked out perfectly! But I still wanted some copper drops in some other, specific places so I used a Versamark pen. I worried that they might look too perfect but they blended in well.

I hope you can join us over at the C4C blog this week. We also have a sad announcement over there about a team member who passed away. So sad.

13 Cards with 1 Kit!! Plus Review of Spellbinders Card Kit

I recently jumped into creating with the Spellbinders October Watercolour Card Kit of the Month. (Whew that’s a long name huh?) In 2 days I made 13 cards and I could have kept going as I have LOTS of supplies left!

I made a video to show you all the cards. I hope this inspires you if you have this kit or you simply enjoy the cards if you don’t.

(In case the video won’t load, here is the YouTube link https://youtu.be/gsac_Tm87wk)

I added a few extra things like dies, sequins, gems, Nuvo drops, foam adhesive (some comes in the kit but it’s thicker than I usually use), twine, vellum, ribbon and lace.

Oh, and a bit of white cardstock for the extra card bases. I rarely use coloured cardstock for bases anymore. It seems like a waste of money and dark cardstock especially needs a liner or a light coloured gel pen for the message.

Yet I still have so much left over! All but one of the wooden button and epoxy stickers, almost all of the cardstock, TONS of die cuts, about 80% of the sticker sheets, all but one of the journaling spots and tags plus of course the die set and stamp set which never run out!

This kit is definitely the most user-friendly kit I’ve purchased and having so many of the gorgeous die cuts means making cards is fast and fun. I didn’t even use the dies for these cards except for the celebrate die. I did use them for a postcard though.

I can totally see myself making a pocket page with many of the remaining supplies. There are many geared towards home and family.

So here are 6 of the cards plus the postcard. I’ll post photos of the other 7 soon! Leave me a comment: Do you buy card kits? If you do, do you end up using them up? Or do they sit on a shelf like most of mine do? If not, why not? Is this kind of feature something you’d like to continue to see?

Lighthouse on the Coast

While it’s the beginning of winter here, I can always be counted on making a summer card (or 10) anyway. I never allow snowflakes outside to stop my love of all things summer and beachy!

c4c 18 AI lighthouse hike

Our theme at Crazy 4 Challenges last week (sorry I’m late posting) was ‘take a hike’. As I am disabled, hikes are never on the schedule but if I was going to hike, this looks like a great place to do it. But that sounds suspiciously like exercise! Ugh! This ‘watercolour’ was done with Art Impressions watercolour stamps. If you haven’t heard of them, they have various stamps of buildings, animals, trees, plants, flower, animals, accessories like pots and birdhouses and even a few kids. To create a watercolour scene, you stamp them with water soluble inks or markers on Bristol or watercolour paper. Then you blend the ink with a wet brush. Ta Da! Your own watercolour painting! The flowers in pots are usually the easiest. Buildings are pretty easy too if you watch the videos on YouTube to get the best results. I use a combo of Tombow and Marvy Le Plume II markers. The former blend moderately while the latter blend a lot. If you want the ink to spread but still maintain the lines fairly clearly, use the Tombow. If you want a very washy look, use Marvy. I’m not a huge fan of Stampin’ Up! or Distress markers but as long as they are water-based, they should work to some extent.

It does take some practice to get these to work. I’ve tried a few times and not loved the results. But as I get to be a better watercolourist and get better tools, Hello Black Velvet Brushes, I do a better job with these stamps. Watching a million of their videos helps a ton too! I still have lots of work to do, especially on the tall trees but it was fun. Especially imagining myself there instead of in the snowy north! We are actually in one of the more southern areas of Canada so we don’t usually get any serious snow until late December or January. We often have a non-white X-mas but this year winter is really early! I hadn’t even gotten out the kids winter boots when we got a huge storm! But no matter the weather, expect more summer cards to come!

Leave the other Images Alone

Ok, so that’s a weird title. Allow me to explain! This week at Crazy 4 Challenges we were asked to make a card using only images of leaves. Get it? Leave the other images? I’m so punny!

c4c 18 purple leaves n flowers

I started out very well, doing the ‘only leaves’ thing. Nuvo glitter paste through a leaves stencil by PTI then a shimmery vellum leaf die cut by Simon Says Stamp. But I needed a focal point so I had to go with flowers. I’ve hoarded these Prima flowers for the longest time, do you ever do that? Hoard your prettiest embellishments? I’m very guilty!

I accidentally dropped a big blob of glue on the far right edge of my card so I had to trim it. I could have just trimmed the card base down the same amount but why not use my mistake as an embellishment opportunity? I added a sequin to cover the remaining glue and when I added the card base, I covered the white edge that would otherwise show with silver glitter paper (exactly like the Tim Holtz glitter papers) from the dollar store! A huge roll for far less than the TH version! Score!!

c4c 18 purple leaves n flowers2

The small banner was a freebie from Winnie & Walter (another SCORE!) which I die cut from some Co’ordinations cardstock. It was partially die cut so I could make it a wee bit longer. If you aren’t familiar with partial die cutting, I only die cut the banner end and the sides of the die by placing it between my plates with the small straight end outside the plates. It didn’t cut so I could hand cut it making the die cut longer. You can also make a die cut longer by lining up the die with the end where you want it and sending it through your die cutter again, this time leaving the banner end outside the plates. But because my edges were straight, I didn’t bother.

The sentiment is by Simon Says from the Sketched Flowers set. I ADORE the calligraphy font used for the sentiments! I will use them constantly, far more than the flowers. The ink bled on the paper the first time I stamped it so I had to die cut another banner and try again. This time I warmed up the paper before stamping and heat set it after. Sadly I managed to melt/warp my MISTI mousepad at the same time. What a dumbnut huh? Oh well. That’s my life!

Pop on over to the Crazy 4 Challenges blog this week to see our Design Team’s inspiration and after you make a leafy card, come on back to enter the challenge!

Polar Bear Hugs – Wait, aren’t Polar Bears White?

I finally broke down and did it. I made a winter card! I tend to avoid winter cards until it’s well into winter but since we got snow, real stay-on-the-ground snow two days ago, I was inspired to make this card.

polar bear galaxy

The polar bears are stamps by Hero Arts stamped on Arches rough paper; I used the same paper for the background. So I have a story about polar bears and what colour they are. Did you know that polar bear fur isn’t white; it isn’t actually a colour at all. It’s clear and hollow. So any colour you see, is reflected light, or dirt. My dentist is an amazing photographer and he’s been to many places to take pictures of animals. He has a coffee table book in his office of each trip. One, of course, is of his trip to photograph polar bears. They look pretty yellow-ish brown in most of his photos. So I tried to copy the colours from his photos.

polar bear galaxy2.jpg

The sky gave me some problems. I was trying desperately to portray an aurora borealis but it’s harder than I thought. This was my third attempt but I finally converted it to a galaxy background. I cut the hugs dies from Simon Says Stamp from silver mirrored cardstock and vellum. They look black here but if you look at the edges you can see they are silver. The little hearts dies are from SSS too, also cut from silver paper. The sentiment is from the same polar bear stamp set. I’ve tried many products to add snow/stars to watercolour backgrounds. I found this time that slightly diluted Copic opaque white gave me the perfect tiny droplets that stayed white after drying. I’ve used white acrylic paint and white gouache as well as silver and white watercolour paints. This definitely gave me the best results.

Cancer Awareness Card

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! At Crazy 4 Challenges this week the theme was to make an awareness, support or hope card. I had a very amazing friend who passed away from breast cancer that metastasized to her brain. I wish I had been making cards back then because she would have been on of the most appreciative people I’ve ever given a card. I think of her often and miss her.

c4c 18 hope

The background was stamped with a text stamp from Taylored Expressions. I used Pink Peony ink from PTI for the stamping. The ‘hope’ sentiment is by a.muse studio which I stamped in Berry Sorbet on ivory paper and cut out by hand. The ‘doily’ is a die cut using multiple Spellbinders’ dies that are made to work together. I cut the outer die then stacked the inner layers together and embossed them. It really makes for a gorgeous die cut. If you cut all the layers instead of embossing them, you get a bunch of circle frames with lots of beautiful details.

c4c 18 hope2

This layout is one I use a lot. It’s extremely versatile especially if you  like to add lots of small details. But you can replace the whole cluster of flowers etc with a single focal image and it still looks great. The die cut is by Lifestyle Crafts (which was bought out by WRMK I think) which I accented with Copic markers to make it look more like a real ribbon. I could have, and have previously used, actual ribbon but since I already had ribbon on the page, I went with the die cut. The flowers all came from Really Reasonable Ribbon, they have quite the selection now!

To finish the card, I added epoxy dots and a couple of pearls. If you have a moment, pop on over to the C4C blog and see the inspiration the team has for you this week!

Love for a Lifetime Card

Those of you who are new to my blog may not know that I’m on the Crazy 4 Challenges design team. We post a new challenge every week so I encourage you to pop on over and join us! Our challenges can be anything from colour and sketch challenges to inspiration photos and themes. This week we had a wide open theme to simply make a card for World Card Making Day! Super easy right?

c4c 18 WCMD vellum leaves.jpg

I made my card to also satisfy The Paper Players Tic Tac Toe challenge #412. The column I chose included the prompts Green, Any Embossing and sequins/glitter. Sadly and typically, I missed linking up to the challenge in time. Oh well, {insert loud sigh here}. The background was stamped with the Simon Says Stamp Modern Rose Bloom with embossing ink and heat set with white pearl embossing powder. The leaves were cut with a SSS die out of some sheer vellum. I like this particular vellum (sorry it’s really old so I don’t have a manufacturer) because it is so sheer. Two layers filled in a bit more space and looked elegant too.

I went with a simple die cut sentiment to finish the card. The stamps and dies are by PTI; I stamped it in embossing ink and added Gold Perfect Pearls mica powder which sticks to the ink. Don’t forget to add a mist of water to any Perfect Pearls you use as that helps activate the gum Arabic which is in the powder. I cut up some foam adhesive into thin strips and added it to the back of the die cut. I covered every surface so it would help hold the vellum down. To anchor the remaining leaves, I added some sequins placing my adhesive behind them so it would be hidden. Any time you use vellum, it takes some creativity to hide the adhesive. I never use any kind of vellum adhesive, or any other adhesive for that matter, as it always shows at least a bit. It drives me crazy if any shows.

Don’t forget to join us over at the C4C blog! I’d love to see you there!

Baby Love Card

I could make baby cards all day long! Everyday! They are my absolute favourite. However, I don’t know anyone who is preggy or is planning on having a baby anytime soon. So reluctantly I don’t make too many baby cards; my stash is already full! But when a challenge comes along, I just have to make one anyway!

baby love insp photo card.jpg

I used some My Mind’s Eye papers for this card, they weren’t baby themed, they just happened to include the colours I wanted to use. I cut the baby word with a die from Winnie & Walter from Ellen Hutson Craft-a-Board (CAB) twice, glued them together then covered it in patterned paper. I did the same with the Simon Says Stamp love die, though I only used one layer of CAB and I shaded the yellow paper with Distress ink so it was a shade darker than same paper which I used on the base. Fusion Baby Shower-001

The banner was cut using a die from PTI. I love those tiny scattered hearts. The vellum panel is actually two layers, the striped layer was very, very translucent so I added a layer of plain vellum underneath. Both were cut with Stitched Rectangle dies by Simon Says Stamp. Once that was all glued down, I added some sequins and gems to the background. Last but not least, I added tiny flowers to the Baby word based on the inspiration from the photo. In the end, I totally loved this card. It’s one of my faves! What do you think? Leave me a comment below and don’t forget to subscribe to make sure you don’t miss any of my crafty posts.
