The Shabby Tea Room Design Team Application 2

For this card, I was inspired by the colours, flowers and overall look of the photo. For The Shabby Tear Room DT call.

tstr banner card

I also used a sketch challenge but it’s over now :(. I coloured the mid-tone flower with Copic markers. It’s a shame I didn’t have time to colour an image for this application but I for sure will do so in the future. That’s if I make the team of course! 😉

Ombre Butterfly

I was inspired by another Retro Sketches sketch and an ombre challenge (don’t remember which one) for this card but they have ended.

ombre butterfly n lace

But, I also made this one for the Memory Box butterfly challenge.

And it is still going! The pink part of the butterfly is painted with watercolours. Then I added the outline butterfly on top.

I’m also entering this in the SSS Anything Goes challenge.

Enjoy, Rebecca

Navy and Pink PTI Blog Hop

pti blog hop logo

Welcome to another PTI Blog Hop! My card was made when I was very tired this morning, I got up early because I couldn’t sleep, so please forgive a lack of inspiration. Overall though, I think it’s a pretty card worth posting.

navy pink PTI hop 0415

I really wish PTI made a cardstock that was about halfway between blush and hibiscus and not peachy/coral like Melon Berry and Berry sorbet. Then I would have used that for the sentiment panel and the flowers would stand out more. IRL the sponging on the edges of the flowers shows more and they stand out from the background a bit better.

Such a gorgeous inspiration photo right? The flowers were made with a die from Memory Box and I took the time to shape them nicely before adding them to the card. I should have sponged them before shaping them though so I will make a note to myself for next time. Not only did they not sponge very smoothly but the tiny tab used to keep the flower 3-D

I love making lots of types of cards but I find myself using get well and thanks most so I love having lots of choices of sentiment in these two categories. This set, Healing Touch Sentiments, has lots of options. I am dying to get a Get Well die though. Anyone know of one? The only one I can find, from Hero Arts, isn’t in a font I like too well.

I used Cardabilities sketch 121 for this card. Isn’t it awesome? They have the best sketches for all cards but especially shabby chic ones.

Enjoy the rest of the hop! Rebecca

Lace and Roses Mini Pail

This is for the Shabby Tea Room Challenge this week.

lace and roses pail

I took a basic pail I got from either a dollar store of the Dollar Spot in Target and added some metallic rub-on to the outside. I quickly realized that, even with heat setting, it wasn’t going to set. Bummer. So I added some workable fixatif. Bad idea. It seemed to work but if rubbed to hard, it came off. Then I tried adding some red line tape to attach the lace. The first piece of tape wouldn’t stick at all and removed the rub on and fixativ from the area I was taping and a bit beyond. Seriously? I decided to embrace the uneven nature figuring it lent to the distressed look I was going for.  At least the second piece of tape stuck.

TSTR _247

Next I added a Spellbinders fancy label which I stamped and distressed with more rub-on. I used ribbon to attach the label and added some pearls. I didn’t have quite the right colour of roses so I added some Copic airbrushing to them. Perfect! These were adhered over top of some mini ivy die cuts. I used Copic markers on white paper to get just the right colour. Click on the photo to link to the challenge.

Prairie Smile Card for Unscripted Sketches #254

Doesn’t this card remind you of a prairie dress? I love these patterns and colours.

RebeccaEdnie254

I’ve been wanting to copy the paper piecing technique Melissa Phillips uses for ages. I finally decided it would be perfect with this card. You can see her card here. I’m entering this card in the CASE Study DT challenge.

I hope you will join us this week on Unscripted Sketches. I love the ‘sentiment/quote’ part at the bottom. I have tons of tiny stamps I love to stamp repeatedly as a border. What do you have in your stash that would work?

Enjoy, Rebecca

Spring has Arrived for Unscripted Sketches #241

Ok, I know, I am jumping the gun in a huge way. Most of us are locked in the grip of winter and struggling through snow and freezing temperatures. So I felt a pop of spring was a necessity to cheer me and everyone else up.

apring has arrived 1

I really stretched the sketch this week. But it was fun to see the branches work as the grey strips on the sketch. Ok, so I know the ‘Spring’ looks crooked but I SWEAR it isn’t! I measured it twice! I think it’s the slant of the ‘r’, then the fact that the top line of the ‘n’ is low and the bottom of it dips down combined with ‘g’ tail dipping down too.

spring has arrived 2

The centers of the flowers are made with a tiny dot of Viva paper pen. The branches are held with glue only at the thicker part of the branch so the thinner parts with the flowers sit off the paper a bit giving the, dimension. I cut some small bits off the upper branch and moved one smaller branch and relocated it to make it look different from the bottom branch so more  realistic.

I’d love to see what you would do with this sketch? Do you play it clean and simple? Jazz it up? Stick right to the sketch? or go outside the box? Please be sure to join us at Unscripted Sketches this week! Thanks so much to all of you who come back and play often or even every week!

Door Sign for Unscripted Sketches #235

This week I took inspiration from an unconventional source. An item from a women’s steals site.

RebeccaEdnie235

The item I was inspired by was basically the same, a sign for your door with a turning upper layer that rotates to reveal several different signs which I should at SheSteals.com. There was one for your dishwasher, clean vs dirty, too. There are magnets on the back to hold it in place. I would have added some lade or ribbon or more layers of paper but I wanted it to be weather-proof in case I left it out and it started to rain or snow. What I have to really remember is to not leave it out too long with the ‘Come on in’ left showing!!

door sign b

I made it with die cut circles of craft-a-board and patterned paper with a brad and a flattened bead cap in the center. The flower is made from a Memory Box cherry blossom die which I stiffened with outdoor Mod Podge also applied to the rest of the project. Unfortunately, outdoor Mod Podge is sticky even when dried for a long time, I feature I HATE (I hear Martha Stewart decoupage medium is weather proof and not sticky but I didn’t have any) so inside I added two 1” circles of naked craft-a-board so the larger circles would rotate smoothly.

un sc sk235

There is still one more spot on the under layer for another little note but I couldn’t think of anything else. I can still add something if I want to later. I’ll probably have to add a piece of paper or use Staz-on or archival ink because I’ve sealed it but it could work. These are quick and easy to make; contact me if you’d like the exact measurements. It turned out that three messages underneath would fit perfectly so just email me for the circle and cut off dimensions!

We will still be having sketches all through the holidays so if you find yourself bored at all be sure to come on out and play. Do you sew? Quilt? Knit? Do Mixed Media? Paint? Doesn’t just have to be basic card making, paper crafts and scrapbooking though of course we love to see those crafts! We welcome anything you create! We’d even be happy to see baking that fits the sketch! Please play with our super talented team this week too at Unscripted Sketches!

Enjoy, Rebecca

Shabby Baby Card for Unscripted Sketches

This sketch was a lot of fun! Some of them kinda stump me at first but this one flowed easily!

RebeccaEdnie234

The ‘Baby’ die is by Marianne I think and the baby things are by Memory Box. They are really quite teensy, for comparison, this is a 5×7 card. The bottle and rattle are about a bit less than an inch high and the soother is only about 3/8” high!

un sc sk234

I coloured them with Copics and oh, so gently sponged them with Distress ink. I also had to be very careful with the word to get ink sponged on the inside areas of the die. I used a Fantastik for the tiny areas. It’s like a sponge tipped pen you can dip in ink. Also good for fixing missed areas of solid stamping.

baby closeup1

The papers are from Little Darlings and G45’s patterns and solids pack. The baby face flower is a chipboard piece. The greyish buttons are Mother of Pearl and look so much nicer IRL!

baby closeup2

I have a couple girlfriends who are pregnant right now so hopefully one of them has a little girl! I have several boy cards already in my stash.

I do hope to see you over at Unscripted Sketches later this week! We’d love to have you join us! Even if you can’t play. be sure to check out the DT’s awesome projects; they are a talented bunch!

Pink Rose and Flourish Card

Once again, I missed linking this up to a challenge. Fortunately, I made it for two challenges, one of which isn’t over yet! Yeah!

pink rose flourish

Not much to tell here. I used last week’s Retro Sketches for the layout. The other challenge is Joan’s Gardens weekly challenge to use pink and white only, something curvy like a flourish or vine and a flower of some kind. Check, check and check! I added some colour to the vertical piece of DP because it was too much like the background using a blend of Tattered Rose and Spun Sugar Distress inks. The colours don’t look like they match so well in this but I promise, they do IRL. The stamping isn’t at all peachy like it appears. Wish I knew more about photo editing.

Enjoy, Rebecca

Cherry Blossom Anniversary Card

I recently bought the coolest flower die. It makes gorgeous cherry blossoms. I made them in an unusual colour combo but I love that I can personalize them!

grimble ann 12 card

The colours of this card are epecially unusual to anyone who knows me well. Orange is one of my least favourite colours but I have been know to use it under the right circumstances like as an accent, when I love the paper pack or when the person I am making the card for loves bright colours! The latter is the case this time. Oh, and my blonde little guys look awesome in orange so you might see it on a scrap  page at some point!

grimble ann 12 card cherry blossom closeup

Making the blossoms is easy. Die cut all the pieces. I cut all of mine from ivory card stock. Then I coloured the star shaped piece with an apricot marker. Same for the center of the sunburst shaped piece. The little ‘sticks’ I coloured in blush and the tips are pumpkin. The sticks and tips are coloured on both sides. The flowers are sponged with blush ink.

memory box cherry blossom die graphic

To make the flower 3-D, you glue the tab to the back of the next petal. However, I found it was hard to get the tab to stay glued as it is tiny, less than 1/8” long! When I make it again, I won’t glue the tab first. To prepare the center, use an embossing tool and a foam or embossing mat to cup the star piece. Repeat for the sunburst. Then adhere the sunburst to the inside of the star. Now you want to curve the petals and squeeze the flower into a cup shape. Then add adhesive to the outside of the cupped center and the tab and add the center to the flower. While holding down the flower center with the embossing tool, make sure the tab is touching and hold until it is dry. All done!

I’m entering this in the Joan’s Gardens challenge this week and this April’s SFYTT (turned 90 degrees). Joan is offering 6 guest designer spots for participants! I’m really hoping I get a chance!
